Grants for woodland management in England

There are two main sources of government grant to encourage positive woodland management for wildlife:

Environmental Stewardship Scheme (ESS)
Administered by Defra, this is England's primary agri-environment scheme, and recently replaced both the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and Environmentally Sensitive Areas Scheme. ESS provides funding to farmers and other land managers in England who deliver effective environmental management on their land.

Online information about ESS is available here . For more information, contact Phil Warren, North Pennines Black Grouse Recovery Project, or your local office of Defra's Rural Development Programme.

English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS)
This is administered by Forestry Commission England. Click here for online information from their website.

For further information, contact Phil Warren, North Pennines Black Grouse Recovery Project, or your local Forestry Commission office.
